A Message from Westvale Public School’s Principalwestvale_voyageurs

Bruce Alexander is Principal of Westvale Public School and is married to Sherry Lawlor Alexander and has two children Tanis, age 9 and Seamus age 7.

Dear community member: I have witnessed the development of the Westvale neighbourhood since the 1990’s and have been impressed with how this community has worked very hard at developing a strong sense of caring for others. Living in Waterloo I know that the Westvale community is held in high regard.  Since arriving at Westvale in January of this year I have had the wonderful opportunity to meet all the students and many parents in our community. I feel extremely humbled to be called to serve this community as the Principal of Westvale Public School. I believe that Westvale Public School can serve as a strong centre that supports the neighbourhood and fosters community. One vehicle I will use to promote this and sharing thoughts about public education with the community is through the Westvale Community Newsletter. I will be addressing issues as they relate to the community in general and education in particular. Issues I will be looking at will include the following topics:

  • Bullying- What types exist in our society? How do we proactively work at teaching parents, kids and teachers about how not to bully and how to stop bullying when it occurs?
  • Parent engagement- How parent engagement is evolving in our changing society? How it can dramatically impact culture and learning?
  • Styles of parenting - There are several ways to parent children each style has it own pros & cons.
  • French Immersion and Core French Programs- How does it work in schools? What programs are offered for children and what do different French programs offer for families interested in promoting the French culture with their children?
  • Homework- How much homework should my child be doing every night? What is the role of the school, the parent and the child?
  • Families with Special Needs children- What supports can be put in place for children who have special needs at the school, family and community levels?
  • Interviews- What can you expect when you come to school for an interview? What is reasonable to expect from all parties involved in supporting your child at school?
  • Nutrition Programs - What role can a school play in supporting families in healthy choices for children at school? I will look at Provincial policy, curricula, Nutrition for Learning programs and other community supports.

I look forward to getting know this community on a much deeper level during my tenure as Principal of Westvale Public School.
